After appearing to set a new state record, relay teams were disqualified due to an administrative error. Contrary to other published reports, all Minnetonka swimmers were eligible athletes and no athlete competed in more than four events.

Minnesota Department of Education released state test scores on August 1. Minnetonka is #1 in Math and #2 in Reading in the Metro Area. Among Minnetonka students 92 percent are proficient in reading and 85 percent are proficient in math.

At MMW, an age-old tradition comes to an end this year. For the last 15 years, sixth graders celebrated the culmination of their ancient history studies by enjoying a day-long Ancient Civilization Celebration. The tradition will change next year to complement the new state standards for sixth grade social studies.

Approximately 700 students will graduate from Minnetonka High School on June 7.  The class has an impressive list of accomplishments, including an average ACT score of 25.3, state championships in athletics and thousands of hours of community service.

Minnetonka students posted record gains in reading and math on NWEA spring testing, which measure student growth from fall to spring. In five years of elementary school, Minnetonka students gain 11 grade levels, far exceeding national norms.

Fourteen MHS students participated at the annual A Vous La Parole 2012 French-speaking contest at the University of Minnesota on Wednesday, April 25. Five solo and group performances earned 4-starred blue medals, the highest rating.

MHS senior Anna Benke was honored at the Athena Awards on Friday, May 4. Throughout her high school career, Anna excelled in track and field and gymnastics. Anna plans to attend North Dakota State University next year and compete in the pole vault while majoring in nursing.

The Minnetonka School Board is seeking applications and has established the process that will be use to appoint a School Board member to fill the remainder of the term vacated by Erin Adams who resigned from the Board in April when she moved out of the District. The application deadline is June 12, 2012, 5:00 pm.

MHS juniors Jacob Neis, Heather Blundell and Wenfei Liu are among the top secondary math students in Minnesota. Jacob qualified to be a member of the 2012 Minnesota All-State Math Team while Heather and Wenfei are vying for two spots on the team.

Leo Segal, Justyn Fine and Jake Siefker took 5th place as a team at the Minnesota State Chess Association tournament in the K-9 section. Individually, Justyn came in 5th place overall, Leo in 9th and Jake in 13th. All three qualified to play in the national tournament.

With a legacy of accomplishments and just shy of twelve years of service, Erin Adams has announced her resignation from the Minnetonka School Board, effective April 19, 2012, on which date she will no longer be a resident of the school district due to the sale of her home. The April 12 School Board meeting was her last. The Board invites community members and employees to a public reception on Thursday, April 26, 4:00 – 5:30 PM to say farewell and thank Ms. Adams for her service.

Classroom construction begins at both middle schools. Five classroom additions plus two maintenance projects at each school will accommodate increasing enrollment while taking advantage of economies of scale without increasing property tax rates.

Four teams of MME 7th graders competed at the Regional World Savvy Challenge. Greta Bleeker won first place in the Junior Division Action Roundtable. The teams developed innovative solutions for this year’s theme of “Sustainable Communities.”

On February 11 a Minnetonka Middle School West Science Bowl Team took first place at the Regional Science Bowl and will compete at the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in April. A second MMW Team won the Civility Award for excellent sportsmanship.

In the summer of 1961 a young Alicejean Leigh was studying nursing at Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter, Minn. when she met an Army recruiter at the Minnesota State Fair. Looking back, she says can’t completely pinpoint the reason she chose to enlist, except that the Army’s Student Nurse Program would help her pay for her final two years of school so she signed up.

At the June 2 School Board meeting members of the Minnetonka Anchor Club presented the District with its final payment. It fulfilled – in just two years – the organization’s planned three-year financial commitment to the construction of the Minnetonka Aquatics Center, which opened in 2009.
