 Biography

Matt is the Signal Companies Professor and Associate Dean of Dartmouth University Tuck School of Business in Hanover, New Hampshire. Matt is a recognized international expert on economics and globalization policies. Becoming a professor at Dartmouth at age 25, his research focuses on the competitiveness of American workers in the American economy, trade and investment flows around the world, and the value of the U. S. dollar, energy markets and the price of oil. He served on the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) from 2005 to 2007, working with CEA chair Ben Bernanke, now chair of the Federal Reserve. His research has been supported by several grants from organizations including the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation.

Matt has published dozens of articles as book chapters and in peer-reviewed journals; he has coauthored and coedited three books, including Globalization and the Perceptions of American Workers; he has served and currently serves in various editorial positions for several academic journals; and he has made numerous presentations at academic conferences and seminars.

Matt is currently a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research; a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations; an academic advisor to the McKinsey Global Institute; and a member of the academic advisory board of the International Tax Policy Forum. He regularly contributes op-eds to the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times, and his ideas are widely featured in business media such as Business Week, The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. He has appeared on several TV and radio programs such as CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight and NPR’s All Things Considered. For many years he has consulted both to individual firms and also to industry organizations that support dialogue on issues of international trade, investment and taxation. At Tuck he co-directs the flagship executive-education program Global Leadership 2020.

Matt graduated from Notre Dame University summa cum laude with a Bachelors degree in economics, and then went to MIT for his Ph.D. He’s been at Dartmouth University since 1994. Matt has worked internationally and extensively in Europe and Asia focusing on topics including: how knowledge is shared among multinational firms, government policies toward globalization and relationships between the labor market and international trade, investment and immigration.

Minnetonka teacher Glenn Skoy said,” Anything he did, he did well.” His ties to Minnetonka are strong.  Every year since graduation, he comes back to meet with Minnetonka High School friends. “We did very different things in school when we were there,” he says, “but we were able to build relationships when we were at Minnetonka because it was such an inclusive environment.”

Matt lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife Lindsey and sons Nicholas and Jacob.
