 2011 Speakers

 
 

 
Dr. Douglas Reeves is the founder of The Leadership and Learning Center. He has worked with education, business, nonprofit, and government organizations throughout the world. The author of more than 20 books and many articles on leadership and organizational effectiveness, Douglas Reeves has twice been named to the Harvard University Distinguished Authors Series. Dr. Reeves was named the Brock International Laureate for his contributions to education. Dr. Douglas Reeves also received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Parents Choice Award for his writing for children and parents.

  


Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Englewood, Colorado. A leading researcher in education, he is a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include Designing & Teaching Learning Goals & Objectives, District Leadership That Works, Formative Assessment & Standards-Based Grading, On Excellence in Teaching, and The Art and Science of Teaching. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.  Dr. Marzano received a bachelor’s degree from Iona College in New York, a master’s degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington.

 
Rick Stiggins, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the Assessment Training Institute in Portland, Oregon. Since 1992, the Institute’s professional learning programs have helped teachers and school leaders understand how to use the assessment process and its results to benefit (not merely monitor) student learning. Dr. Stiggins has served on the faculties of Michigan State University, the University of Minnesota, and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, as well as on the research and development staffs of ACT and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory. Dr. Stiggins is author or coauthor of several books and videos, including Classroom Assessment FOR Student Learning, Assessment FOR Learning, Evaluating Assessment Quality, and Assessing Reasoning in the Classroom.

 


Dylan Wiliam, PhD, is deputy director of the Institute of Education at the University of London. From teaching in urban public schools to directing a large-scale testing program to serving in university administration, his professional path has led to a variety of positions at the forefront of education. Dr. Wiliam’s focus is formative assessment strategies, and he has worked with educators in the United Kingdom and North America to develop effective, research-based practices. Dr. Wiliam is also senior research director of the Learning and Teaching Research Center at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey.


 


Dr. Mike Schmoker has worked on school and district improvement, assessment, curriculum and staff development as a central office administrator in two school districts in Arizona, as a senior consultant at McREL (Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory) in Denver, Colorado and now as an independent speaker and consultant. He is a former middle and high school English teacher and football coach. He has written four books and numerous articles, which have appeared in Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan , Education Week and TIME magazine. He has just published another book: RESULTS NOW: How We Can Achieve Unprecedented Improvements in Teaching and Learning.
