Early Enrollment into Kindergarten

Download:  General Information  Application    Preschool Form

In Minnesota, children are required to be five years old on or before September 1 to enter kindergarten. Minnesota law also provides local school districts some flexibility in determining procedures for early enrollment for children with fall birthdays. In the Minnetonka School District an early enrollment consideration is available for children with birthdays between September 2nd and October 31st.  Following are important dates for early enrollment:

1. Parent(s)/guardian(s) considering early enrollment of a child should contact Joan Larson, Early Enrollment Coordinator, at 952-401-6950 or e-mail Joan at joan.larson@minnetonka.k12.mn.us on or before April 17 preceding the September of desired entrance to receive application materials.

2. The parent(s)/guardian(s) must complete and return the Early Enrollment application materials to the Early Enrollment Program Coordinator on or before May 1.  Parents shall provide records from preschool programs attended by the child along with a release of information to permit the preschool teachers to share information with the School District.

3. If the child meets preliminary eligibility requirements, the child will be screened by a Minnetonka School District kindergarten teacher. If additional testing is needed, a licensed school psychologist, determined by the District, will administer an intelligence test and other assessments as needed.

4. A placement decision will be made by and reported to the parent as soon after June 1 as possible but no later than July 31 preceding the anticipated enrollment.  Copies of the information gathered and the Early Enrollment Committee's decision will be available upon request.

5. Current residents missing the May 1 deadline will be expected to send children at the age appropriate time to Kindergarten, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Early enrollment is a big decision for most families. The early enrollment option is intended for children with fall birthdays who have demonstrated a readiness to be successful in kindergarten. Since your child’s school success is extremely important to us, we encourage careful consideration of both the benefits and disadvantages of the early entrance option.

The Minnetonka School District is committed to excellence. We look forward to having the opportunity to meet the educational needs of your child. Should you have any questions regarding this procedure and/or early enrollment to kindergarten, please do not hesitate to call your neighborhood school principal or Joan Larson at 952-401-6950.
