 Mathematics: Many paths to success

The mathematics department at MHS offers a variety of courses that range from basic math skills to Advanced Placement or college-level mathematics. Due to the structured and sequential nature of mathematics, good attendance and a commitment to daily homework are requirements for all mathematics classes. Failure to complete one of these sequences in high school means that the student will have to complete it in college prior to taking calculus. Courses such as Standard Algebra, Standard Geometry, Standard Higher Algebra and Finite Mathematics are designed for the motivated student who is unable to handle more rigorous and in-depth mathematics.

Focus Area Skills Learned
General Math working with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and fraction arithmetic
Algebra data handling, drawing scatter plots, graphing and solving equations and more
Geometry understanding of the mathematical system, developing different types of reasoning
Calculus applying calculus, communicating concepts and using correct mechanics
Statistics principles and applications of both descriptive and inferential statistics

Below is the level chart for the Minnetonka mathematics program. An 8th grade student that successfully completes CMP3 would enter the High School at level 2. An 8th grade student that successfully completes CMP3 plus Algebra would enter the High School at level 3. An 8th grade student that successfully completes geometry would enter the High School at level 4. As a student progresses through high school, they will have more options available. A family’s decision as to which course should be taken is best made by discussing the available options with the student’s current mathematics teacher. The Minnetonka School District graduation requirement is that a student successfully complete three years of math at the high school.
