What we do: As a tutor, you will work one-on-one with an academically at-risk 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade student after school, once a week, at Folwell grade school in Minneapolis. Your role is to help that student work on reading, writing and math homework, all under the supervision of a teacher. You don’t have to know what to do for them. You just need to be able to help them with grade-school level homework and be a good role model.
Why should you join?: We are one of largest organizations at MHS because we have fun. You will join over 450 other MHS kids hanging out with friends while doing a good thing. You get to learn hands-on leadership skills in a one-on-one situation, as well as the value of community service and helping others who need you. You will get to see the changes in the kids you work with, and see that you are making a difference in their lives. You get hours toward the Presidential Service Award, you can earn a Varsity Letter in Community Service, and the experience looks great on your resume. Who knows, maybe you’ll get a great idea for your college essays!
Who we are:
Backpack is a 17-year old organization, started in 1997 at MHS by one student who wanted to make a difference. We have grown to over 450 students last year at Minnetonka, who donated approximately 10,000 hours of one-one-one direct tutoring time. We are an all-volunteer-run group that serves the development of at-risk grade school kids, while creating leadership and service opportunities for high school students.
Your Commitment: There is no fee for participation or for transportation. All we ask from you is your wholehearted commitment one afternoon a week after school. Pick a day that works for you, Monday through Thursday.
Where we tutor: This year, we will be concentrating all of our tutoring efforts on the students at Folwell Performing Arts School located at 3611 20th Avenue in Minneapolis. Their number is 612.668.4550.
Transportation: We have a free bus all four days of the week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays. If you prefer, you may ride with friends or meet new friends in a carpool with other students. Because we have only one bus each day, we have to prioritize seats on the bus for the freshmen first, then sophomores, then juniors, and finally for the seniors.
Dates and Times: We start the week of Oct. 20, and end on the last week of March. We leave MHS from the East parking lot doors immediately after school, and arrive at Folwell School by 3:25 p.m. You will be done tutoring at 4:45 p.m., and will be back at MHS at the East Doors around 5:30 p.m.
