Minnetonka High School Prom - May 17, 2013

9 - 11:59pm at Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
Theme: The Great Gatsby

Juniors and seniors may purchase tickets in the commons from May 13-17. The cost is $20 per person or $40 per couple.  You must have a ticket to enter the dance. Juniors and seniors in need of financial assistance, please check in the counseling office with Peggy Dressel or Mary Beth Wiig

All freshman and sophomores going as a date with a junior or senior will need to pay for their own ticket as there is no aid available.

Photographs
A free photo booth will be available to students during the evening. A formal photographer will also be available to students at cost.

Pictures are approximately $25 depending on the package purchased and must be paid for at the dance. Students will be able to pick them up in the commons the following week.

Conduct
Appropriate attire is necessary as it is a school event and must align with the rules in the MHS Navigator. The theme this year is “Great Gatsby”.  There are a few young men who wear a suit instead of a tux, but most guys wear tuxes.  Girls wear either long or short dresses. Many students will dress to the theme, others will keep it traditional.  It is considered to be a “Formal” dance.  ALL students must wear shoes.

Reminder:  Students will need to tell the gatehouse attendant they are attending the “Minnetonka High School Prom” (or any variation of that title) to go through without paying the regular admission fee.

For more information about Prom, please contact Terri Ellis or Becky Johnson.

 Prom FAQ's

Can I bring someone not from Minnetonka High School as my date?
Yes, non-MHS students must have a current high school ID from the school they attend.  Each MHS student bringing someone from another school must see Mr. Adney prior to the dance.  Also, at the dance, please introduce the person to Mr. Adney so they can feel welcome.

Is there a bus from Minnetonka High School?
There is no bus from MHS.  Many students rent a “bus” or limousine but it is not necessary.  All students attending prom must find transportation to and from The Arboretum.  Please be picked up no later than midnight.

What do people wear?
There are a few young men who wear a suit instead of a tux, but most of the boys wear tuxes.  Girls wear either long or short dresses.  It is considered to be a “formal” dance.  All students must wear shoes.

  Know our Kids

Tonka CARES offers the following suggestions for parents to help keep our teens safe on Prom night:
  1. Set clear rules, discuss in advance the consequences of breaking them, and then enforce these rules.
  2. Talk candidly with your teen about the risks of drug use and drinking, including what to do if they come across an alcohol poisoning victim or accident.
  3. Walk your teen through different scenarios and discuss how to best handle those situations.
  4. Network and connect with other parents to confirm plans and coordinate ground rules.
  5. If your child will be traveling in a limousine or party bus, confirm the company's policy and consequences for underage drinking and drug use.
  6. Consider NOT renting hotel rooms for your child and his or her friends for an "after party."
  7. If you allow your child to attend an "after" party at someone's home, talk to the parents that are hosting about their expections and supervision.
  8. If you agrree to host an "after" party, keep medicine cabinets clear of any commonly abused medicines (especially pain killers), lock up liquor, check backpacks/purses and any opened beverages being brought to your home, and closely supervise the kids. Taking away kid's car keys and saying "Don't drive!" is the same as saying "You can drink, but don't drive." Parents, you are liable for anything that happens at your home so send a clear message to the kids. It's not worth the risk.

It is sometimes awkward to have these discussions or your teen may be reluctant to participate, but it is worth the effort to keep your kids aware of possible situations and your expectations.
