Freshmen Transition Program

Incoming freshman visit MHS several times before the first day of school to pick up school schedules, get pictures taken, and handle other paperwork. Other scheduled events include:
9th Grade Ignite Retreat – Freshmen spend a half day with Senior First Mate Leaders to get to know each other, their leaders, and the school. This is an important first connection to the school so students will not want to miss this! Kids who do attend say they feel more comfortable and relaxed the first day of school.
Breakfast Crew – Once a month, between September and December, 9th graders have the opportunity to hang out with their Senior First Mate Leaders and classmates before school. First Mates give timely information on what’s happening at the school. There are usually games, friendly competition and, of course, free food! 9th Grade Re-Ignite Program – The entire class is brought together during the month of April. Students have experienced their first round of high school finals and are well into their 2nd semester. Lead by national youth speaker, Phil Boyte, and First Mate Leaders, the goals are to build class unity, strengthen personal character, and to remind kids to set a good course for school.

Sophomore Service Project

As 10th graders, students now know the ropes of MHS. The class comes together to work on an important service project. Students have the opportunity to experience all aspects of service:
- Marketing and promotion
- Fundraising
- Education
- Hands-on work
For the past four years, MHS has worked with Kids Against Hunger to help organize and run a food packaging event at the school. Each year, over 65,000 meals have been assembled and sent to central Tanzania or, last year, to Haiti. Members of the community have travelled to both countries to document the distribution of the food.

Junior Unity Program

The entire junior class has had the opportunity to work with the amazing national youth speaker, Keith Hawkins, for the past four years. Junior year is a busy one for students as they begin their post high school planning. This program offers a “pulse check” for students as they begin second semester. Keith challenges students to question the current course they have set at MHS – their academic performance, selection of friends, treatment of others, and decision making, etc. In a direct, funny, and inspirational style, he encourages kids to change their course if needed. Keith’s program is a one of the most popular among students.
Additionally, 60 seniors have the opportunity to work with Keith to help facilitate this half-day program. These students receive phenomenal training by Keith the day before the event. Sign up for program facilitators begins the first week in February and is announced during morning announcements.

Senior Retreat

Youth speaker, Craig Hillier, meets with the senior class in April as they begin to wind down their time at MHS. In Craig’s humorous yet thoughtful style, he speaks to the kids about resilience, responsibility, reflection, and legacy - how they would like to be remembered as a class and as an individual. This is also an opportunity for students to thank those who have had an impact on their life. |
